Men's skin care

Men's skin care: Everything you need to know

This blog article explores why skin care is equally important for men and women and provides insights into the unique skin care needs of men. It addresses the differences in skin structure, sebum production, and collagen levels between men and women, emphasizing the importance of tailored skin care routines. The article offers practical tips on how men can effectively care for their skin, from using body lotions to prevent dryness to dealing with issues like ingrown hair and acne. It also introduces skin care products designed to address these concerns and promote healthier, smoother skin.

1. Men's skin care

For many men, skin care is just a woman's thing and is often put on the back burner. Considering that men are usually not really educated regarding the topic and most beauty blogs and articles target women, it is not surprising that a lot of men label skin care as simple marketing tricks and wonder why they should spend money on something that isn't necessarily important to them.

But aren't daily rituals like cleansing your skin in the evening after a busy day an important part of personal hygiene? In the Korean culture, going to bed without completing the nightly skin care routine is like going to bed without brushing your teeth. Yet it doesn't take much at all to actually do something good for your skin and to keep it healthy and nourished.

The right skin care not only ensures smooth skin but also helps to improve the barrier function of the epidermis layer in its natural regenerative capacity. In addition, regular skin care gives the body youthful freshness and has the effect of maintaining the elasticity of the skin. With this in mind, we have prepared some tips and tricks that can help men achieve optimal results at any age with a minimal investment of time.

2. Reasons why men’s skin requires different care than women’s skin

Due to the higher testosterone level, the skin structure of men and their needs differ significantly from those of women.  On average, women's skin is 15% thinner than men's and their sebaceous glands are smaller. As a result, their bodies are less isolated and they loose body heat more quickly.

Men have more sebaceous glands and therefore more pores than women. Both the sebaceous glands and the pores are larger. Men's skin produces about 30% more sebum, which on the one hand provides the skin with more moisture, but on the other hand also has the effect of making it appear greasier and shinier, as well as increasing the risk of skin impurities and acne. Also, the higher oil content contributes to a lower pH value of the skin, which results in a pH value below 5 for men and above 5 for women.

The structure of male skin also differs from that of women, because in comparison they have more collagen fibers - which, unlike women, do not run side by side, but are interconnected. This makes men's skin significantly firmer and more robust. Already in our mid-20s, our body produces less collagen and at the same time breaks down existing fibers. This is, among other things, one of the reasons why the signs of skin aging appear later on men than on women.

When it comes to skin care, it is therefore crucial to consider these differences in your daily skin care routine and only use products that are in line with these needs.

3. Tips on how to effectively take care of your skin

Shower gels, dry heating air and other factors can dry out men's skin, causing rough patches. Especially elbows, knees and shins are often affected. Applying a body lotion on a regular basis after showering gives moisture back to the skin and makes itchy spots disappear. However, men can already do something for smooth and supple skin in the shower. With the help of a peeling, rough areas can be treated. Thanks to the microparticles, dead skin cells can be loosened and the pores do not become clogged.

When it comes to ingrown hair, regular exfoliation can help prevent skin inflammation. One of the products which is particularly suitable here is Natalie’s Smooth Body Lotion that has especially been developed to treat keratosis pilaris (chicken skin) and provides an effective solution for ingrown hair as well as uneven, flaky skin texture.

The Smooth Body Lotion includes lactic acid (AHA) as well as Allantoin that have a keratolytic effect and work on the top layer of the skin to softly dissolve cornifications. This powerful combination visibly improves your complexion by reducing the skin’s pore sizes and preventing the formation of ingrown hairs as well as keratin build-up.

But not only oily skin and shaving are likely to cause skin irritation. Nicotine, alcohol and poor nutrition also often trigger rashes, acne or redness of the skin.

In this case we recommend our popular Purity Body Lotion that has especially been developed for acne-prone, hormonal and oily skin to effectively reduce and prevent impurities, inflammation and redness.

The highly-active acid complex of Gluconolactone, Azelaic Acid and Willow Bark extract has a gentle yet strong exfoliating effect on the skin and prevents the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. The lightweight, non-comedogenic and non-greasy Babassu Seed Oil lends the skin a silky soft feeling and contains a high concentration of fatty acids that have antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory properties.

It is also essential to change sweaty clothing as soon as possible and to wear breathable, air-permeable materials such as cotton, which prevent excess perspiration.

To keep the daily moisture in balance, our Hydration Body Gel is the ideal choice, as it is a super-light, non-greasy moisturizer. It includes a valuable blend of cutting-edge ingredients that will actively hydrate and soothe your skin after a shower or day in the sun to ensure a refreshed and radiant skin appearance.

Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid as well as Panthenol holistically hydrate the skin on all levels and effectively replenish the body's moisture stores for a long-lasting feeling of hydration and comfort.

The powerful combination of Edelweiss, Red Algae and Niacinamides is rich in strong antioxidants and strengthens the skin’s barrier, protecting it from transepidermal water loss as well as environmental aggressors such as urban pollution or bacteria. Calendula and Aloe Vera nourish and calm irritated, dry skin and are strong natural actives to treat acne, irritation, burns, rosacea and eczema.

The bottom line for us, in any case, is that body care is just as important for men as it is for women. Not only because it makes the skin less irritated and red, but also to counteract visible signs of aging.
